How To Capture Time-Lapse Shots


Some moments are just not worth letting slip through our fingers forever. Sometimes a simple image will cut it and preserve these adequately, but what if you need something a bit edgier? Something unique probably that’ll probably make the crown jewel of all your memories. Well if you’re one who is keen for the visual arts, you might find it beneficial learning how to make a time lapse video. “What is a time lapse video exactly?” you ask. Well, you know how in the movies the clouds seem to be running along in the sky before starting or how the cars will be moving so fast they just look just like glowing streaks across the tar? Exactly. It’s great especially for moments where there isn’t a lot of movement. It may be useful for once in a lifetime moments such as taking a total solar eclipse or family moments.

The good part about it is that it can be done even with your mobile phone. Most time lapses involve the camera sitting perfectly still in a fixed position over a period of time so if your camera is going to be facing the sun, it is advised that you put a solar filter over your camera. This is unless of course, you are an Apple user, of which Apple says not to worry. In order to get a good time lapse, you will need a tripod stand and an adapter for your phone to the tripod. For $25 you can get yourself a good tripod and for less than $10 you can get yourself an adapter as well. Of course, you can make a time lapse without these but it comes with the risk of making a really shaky video. On the iPhone, the feature comes at the tail left after slo-mo in the camera app. Instagram also offers a time lapse feature in the app.

Always remember to position the camera horizontally in order to get a better shot and never vertically. In order to shoot a 2-minute time lapse video, you will have to record for at least 20 minutes. Soon enough you will have that all important video to capture your precious memories.
