First of all, never, ever, ever open emails from people that you do not know. Sounds like cliché advice right? Well, it’s very easy for one to mimic the appearance of a legitimate site or company and even easier to make an email seem legit. Most people are often tricked this way leading them to release their private information to this complete stranger. Identity theft and account hacking are only some of the concerns. This ploy is known as “phishing” and emails are programmed to steal information from the unwary.
Another way to protect yourself is to read the company’s privacy policy. Yes, yes we know it’s long and tedious and you normally just pay little attention to them like movie credits. In some cases, that is how many people get hacked. It’s because they don’t know what exactly individuals are entitled to do with your information although very few people get violated this way. One other really good way is to keep your OS (Operating System) software up-to-date. Developers often add bits of information to help combat this form of fraudulent behavior. Always being as safe as you can possibly be is the best way to prevent such incidences from occurring.
Lastly, always check your bank statements. You can always notice when suspicious behavior is taking place and whether your finances are being siphoned by an outside source. Many people often miss them as negligible amounts and in some cases, you will only realize it when it’s too late. There are several other ways to prevent fraud but the best is always to remain vigilant because sometimes the most overlooked little things can lead to tragedy. Fraud is no joke and the more we can do to fight it, the better.
